The client was looking to upgrade a basement area which included a divided living and sleeping area, large laundry/storage room and awkward bathroom into an ADU space for his mother. Design changes included swapping existing living and sleeping areas, rearranging the bathroom, reducing the size of the laundry room and adding a kitchenette. Existing free-standing closet system was repurposed to create a new sleeping area where the existing living room was and the existing sleeping area was modified to include a small living area for watching TV and addition of a new kitchenette with refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, microwave and small eating peninsula. A small hot plate will allow for simple meal preparation. The original bathroom included a pedestal sink, toilet (that was positioned so the tank was partially inset in an interior wall) and small 32”x32” shower. The reconfigured bathroom includes a full vanity, inset medicine cabinet mirror, toilet (which is entirely in the room) and a full-size 60”x36” shower. All new floors throughout (LVP in living area and tile in bathroom), new cabinets, millwork, lighting and paint.
